TRIGLAV LAKES VALLEY, Slovenia | day hike from Bohinj

Triglavska jezera valley is approximately 8km LONG ALPINE KARST VALLEY between BOHINJ and TRENTA, with lakes that occured in the hollows with watertight sediments. The other name for the valley is SEDMERA JEZERA VALLEY, which in translation means „the seven lakes valley“. Allthough in reality the number of lakes and ponds in the valley is actually higher. Some of the lakes are more like ponds and some of them often dry out, this is why the number is discussable.

The first lake, JEZERO POD VRŠACEM or JEZERO V PODSTENJU lies on almost 2000 metres above the sea level and it is covered with an ice layer most of the year. Towards the south, under the cottage Zasavska koca na Prehodavcih, we find a pond, called MLAKA V LASTAH (in the summer it is mostly dried out). A bit more south there is the second lake, the RJAVO JEZERO (Brown lake), close to which is also the ZELENO JEZERO (Green lake). The fourth lake is the deepest and biggest, there fore it is called VELIKO JEZERO (Big lake) or Jezero v Ledvicah. The fifth and sixth, also called DVOJNO JEZERO (Double lake) has a significant aquamarine color and is located right next to the cottahe Koca pri Triglavskih jezerih. Lake number 7, the ČRNO JEZERO (Black lake) lies in the woods and is the warmest of them all.

THERE ARE MORE WAYS HOW TO REACH THE COTTAGE AT THE LAKES, CALLED KOČA PRI TRIGLAVSKIH JEZERIH:

1. On the road from Stara Fužina (Bohinj) to the parking on Planina Blato, pass Jezero mountain, across Dedno polje mountain, Ovcarija mountain and then over Stapce or Prode – 3hrs 30

2. From Ukanc (Bohinj) to the parking at Koca pri Savici, over Komarca and pass Crno jezero, (Black lake) – 3hrs

3. On the local road from village Soca and along the valley Vrsnih – 5hrs 45

4. On the road from Trenta to Zadnjica – 6hrs

5. From camp Triglav in Trenta over Prehodavci – 6hrs

On the crossing at the wonderful BOHINJ LAKE you turn right over the bridge in the direction of STARA FUŽINA and later on sharp left to the mountain road which ends on a PARKING at PLANINA BLATO. If you are there very early in the morning you do not have to pay parking fee, otherwise it is 10€ (we were there at around 5:30 and were amongst the first ones). First you walk on a broad steep mountain way until you reach the first mountain, PLANINA JEZERO. There are some small old wooden houses, many COWS and also a COTTAGE where you can get food and drinks, allthough not so early in the morning.

Here we stick to the left side and continue to DEDNO POLJE, where you can get some of the most delicious „KISLO MLEKO“, traditional soured milk. You reach this mountain after about one and a half hours of walking from the parking.

On DEDNO POLJE we can choose between different ways, the best and shortest is to continue towards mountain OVČARIJA. Once you are there there are again two ways, both similar lenght, both leading to the cottage at the lakes. We went one way down (OVER ŠTAPCE) and the other way back (OVER PRODE).

THE WAY OVER ŠTAPCE is first quite easy, it gets steep at some times and at one point you can choose to turn right to MALA and VELIKA TIČARICA or stay left to TRIGLAVSKA LAKES. Shortly after this junktion you have to descend down a LADDER and hold on to a few PITONS. Watch your step carefully and stop here and there to admire the magnificent views on the mountains that surround the valley. You can also already see the DVOJNO JEZERO (Double lake) from here.

Between Dvojno jezero (Double lake) and artifitial lake Mocivec under the Ticarica mountain cliffs stands the TRIGLAVSKA LAKES COTTAGE, where you could also sleep over. They have around 30 beds, but it is advisable to make a reservation up front in the summer time. From the parking on Planina Blato you reach the cottage in a little more than three hours. We went back the other way, over Prode, but there are many more possibilities to continue walking to some other mountains from the cottage. If you take the way over Prode, you can enjoy the beautiful views on the South Bohinj mountains, which you do not see if you go over Stapce.

AFTER 8 HOURS OF HIKING we were BACK AT THE CAR where we started the day. If you are doing this hike as a day trip, it is advisable to go very early in the morning in the summer time, because of the sun and heat, but also please do not forget proper HIKING SHOES. We again saw some tourists wearing summer sandals and this is definitely too dangerous here. You can also EXTEND YOUR HIKE and visit a couple of other peaks around the area, but you will need to spend the night at one of the COTTAGES (it is best to make a reservation if you wish to hike on a weekend or in the high summer season).  To rest your legs at the end of the day, you can relax back down at one of Slovenia´s best lakes, BOHINJ LAKE.

It is perfect if you are ever at Bled and Bohinj lakes and have an extra day to spare. The views from up there are awesome and the alpine landscape is charming too 🙂

Oh that´s too bad Helena, I hope you get the chance to revisit in the warmer months sometimes again – true, in the winter hiking can be rather dangerous around here and often simply impossible 🙂

What a beautiful and scenic hike! I love hikes that have great views and/or a lake. The colors of the water is stunning and love how you can get snacks and drinks at those adorable cottages. I haven’t been to Slovenia yet but hope to in the next year or two!
