The already popular vanlife lifestyle has literatelly exploded recently. Not surprisingly though, due to the situation we are in since the global pandemic started in spring 2020. DIY projects of converting vans and cars into camper vehicles, purchases of larger vans and motorhomes, as well as caravans, off-road and overland vehicles are on the rise while many of us believe this is the best way to travel considering the current overses travel restrictions. Spontaneously, independently and as free as it gets, travelling with vans of all sorts can also be significantly cheaper than plane travel. Since many of you are facing this new way of travel for the very first time this summer I think it´s a great time for sharing my thoughts on this topic. Is it all really as romantic as everyone says? Do all those Youtube couples and families really have such a great time spending weeks and months together in those tiny spaces of 5+ square meters? Are you sure that you and your partner will spend this kind of vacation without ending up fighting every day? Well, it’s really not that dramatic, but as usual – not every thing is for everyone. So, here are my 10 basic tips on how to survive vanlife as a couple. Of course, based on our own experience of our previous trips and excursions with LR Defender, which in 2019 we converted into a camper vehicle and used as our home on wheels for quite a few trips so far.

While we are really looking forward to a new family member arriving any day now, I decided to make the best of this extra time to remember one very special period of the last decade, namely the time when Lu and I were left alone and I suddenly had to find myself in the new role of a single mom. Although I am obviously in a completely different situation now, I am happy to look back and I feel like this topic should be discussed more in the media. Because not everything is necessarily as bad as it may sound at first, and because for all those who find themselves in such a situation unexpectedly, a little encouragement is always good. Since this is a travel blog, we will only focus on the travelling aspect when it comes to being a single parent. Si travelling with kids as a single parent even possible? It sure is! First a few words about how me and Lu did it and then we move on to the 10 tips and ideas for carefree travel as a single parent, which are in my opinion the most important. This post might be interesting for everyone who is in a similar situation, for those who may know someone who is, as well as all those who are simply curious about this topic.

Regardless of whether you have been planning your pregnancy for a long time or it all happened rather spontaneously, you will certainly have a bunch of questions once you see a plus on the pregnancy test. Those of us who like to travel or are regularly involved in certain sport activities might even be intimidated at first, questioning whether this new adventure might drastically change the way we spend our free time. Of course, we all want a healthy baby and a nice pregnancy without complications to start with, but we could also feel like we have to make the best of this precious time we still have left as a couple. Even if you already have children, you may want to experience something special with them before they become big siblings. After all, soon they will have to share your attention with someone else. And there is nothing better than one or more great trips and vacations before the baby arrives, well at least for those of us who like to explore the world. Now that I´m almost at the end of my second one I can say I have had two very different pregnancies which have left me with sufficient experience in order to write such a post. Bremerhaven is located in Northern Germany, at the sea and river Weser between the cities of Bremen and Cuxhaven. Its name in translation basically means the port of the Free Hanseatic city of Bremen and this was also this town´s main purpose once it was established back in the early 19^th century. Bremerhaven was one of Germany´s most important trade ports and also the largest emigration port in all of Europe, therefore it is a very interesting city to visit nowadays, showing off its rich history, crossed with modern architecture and typical northern German customs. There are loads of tourist attractions in the city, including numerous unique museums, plus, there is also lots to see and explore in the area which makes it a great weekend trip or simply a stop during a longer road trip. Every visit of my dear home country, Sovenia, leaves me thinking about how beautiful this place actually is. Mighty hills, salty air and the waves of the Mediterranean sea, green valleys, endless forests, mysterious caves, vineyards, pristine lakes and more and more. And everything is so insanely close. Unfortunately, people are all too often unaware of waht they have back home until they actually move abroad and start to miss the things they took for graned before. I can honestly say I was never too attracted to Mallorca, as it has quite a reputation over here in Germany for being a “party island” before anything else. Listening live German Schlager music while drinking pints of Bavarian brewed beer and spending my days on overly crowded beaches among sunburned alcohol smelling bodies? No thank you. However, there came a moment when I was able to take just a day off at the office and this covered 5 free days of holidays. It was a rather quick decision and Mallorca seemed to be our best choice. Lu, 6 yo at the time, and me flew from Hanover, Germany, while Charlie from France, my mom from Slovenia and we all met in Palma. So it was kind of a quick family reunion and in the end it turned out awesome! 5 days of discovering the island with a rented car was just enough to get a real taste of it, Mallorca impressed us with beautiful beaches and crystal clear sea, interesting hilly scenery, caves, enjoyable climate, beautiful architecture, idyllic villages and of course its culinary delicacies. A whole range of low-cost airlines can take you to Mallorca, where, in addition to larger hotels, you can find a lot of affordable accommodation in terms of Airbnb and private apartments, and car or scooter rental is also pretty inexpense. Although I am not exactly the biggest fruit addict and I usually prefer something spicy and salty over something sweet, there is always some fruits found in our kitchen. Most of the time, it’s a bunch of bananas. And because we almost never manage to eat them all before they turn slightly brown, we often use them to prepare a delicious and simple banana bread. Unlike many other fruits and vegetables, bananas are one of the few that are easy to use, even if they are well above the threshold of ripeness. For this exact reason the famous was actually invented in the USA during the times of Great Depression in the first half of the 20th century, as expensive imported bananas “spoiled” all too quickly and the usage of baking soda and baking powder was being largely promoted across the States. The first recipe appeared in a cookbook in 1933, and banana bread is considered one of the most popular simple sweet treats since then. Bananas are also an excellent source of energy and we like to eat them on trips, hikes, road trips and other travels. To satisfy our personal taste we can add a couple of extra ingredients to the original banana bread recipe, so in this post, I´m sharing our basic recipe and adding a couple of ideas for special variants.

Cuxhaven, the northernmost point of Lower Saxony in Germany, is located right at the North Sea at the mouth of the Elbe river and it is one of the most popular German seaside places for day trips from Hamburg, Bremen and around, as well as one of the larger climate resorts for longer summer holidays. Besides relaxing at the beach and exploring Cuxhaven´s historical and architectural sights, it is also a great starting point for visiting UNESCO´s Wadden Sea, day trips to Helgoland, Neuwerk and other islands, longer walks and cycling through surrounding coastal heathlands and more. I have visited Cuxhaven a couple of times during my last 10 years living in Germany and it is also one of my favourite places in these parts of the country.
