MALLORCA, Spain | 5 days with a rented car

Katja FAMILY TRAVELS, SPAIN | MALLORCA 2 Comments

I can honestly say I was never too attracted to Mallorca, as it has quite a reputation over here in Germany for being a “party island” before anything else. Listening live German Schlager music while drinking pints of Bavarian brewed beer and spending my days on overly crowded beaches among sunburned alcohol smelling bodies? No thank you. However, there came a moment when I was able to take just a day off at the office and this covered 5 free days of holidays. It was a rather quick decision and Mallorca seemed to be our best choice. Lu, 6 yo at the time, and me flew from Hanover, Germany, while Charlie from France, my mom from Slovenia and we all met in Palma. So it was kind of a quick family reunion and in the end it turned out awesome! 5 days of discovering the island with a rented car was just enough to get a real taste of it, Mallorca impressed us with beautiful beaches and crystal clear sea, interesting hilly scenery, caves, enjoyable climate, beautiful architecture, idyllic villages and of course its culinary delicacies. A whole range of low-cost airlines can take you to Mallorca, where, in addition to larger hotels, you can find a lot of affordable accommodation in terms of Airbnb and private apartments, and car or scooter rental is also pretty inexpense. So what to see and do in Mallorca? Read more below.

BANANA BREAD | recipe and ideas

Katja FOOD + RECIPES Leave a Comment

Although I am not exactly the biggest fruit addict and I usually prefer something spicy and salty over something sweet, there is always some fruits found in our kitchen. Most of the time, it’s a bunch of bananas. And because we almost never manage to eat them all before they turn slightly brown, we often use them to prepare a delicious and simple banana bread. Unlike many other fruits and vegetables, bananas are one of the few that are easy to use, even if they are well above the threshold of ripeness. For this exact reason the famous was actually invented in the USA during the times of Great Depression in the first half of the 20th century, as expensive imported bananas “spoiled” all too quickly and the usage of baking soda and baking powder was being largely promoted across the States. The first recipe appeared in a cookbook in 1933, and banana bread is considered one of the most popular simple sweet treats since then. Bananas are also an excellent source of energy and we like to eat them on trips, hikes, road trips and other travels. To satisfy our personal taste we can add a couple of extra ingredients to the original banana bread recipe, so in this post, I´m sharing our basic recipe and adding a couple of ideas for special variants.

CUXHAVEN, Germany | weekend trip to the German North Sea Coast

Katja GERMANY Leave a Comment

Cuxhaven, the northernmost point of Lower Saxony in Germany, is located right at the North Sea at the mouth of the Elbe river and it is one of the most popular German seaside places for day trips from Hamburg, Bremen and around, as well as one of the larger climate resorts for longer summer holidays. Besides relaxing at the beach and exploring Cuxhaven´s historical and architectural sights, it is also a great starting point for visiting UNESCO´s Wadden Sea, day trips to Helgoland, Neuwerk and other islands, longer walks and cycling through surrounding coastal heathlands and more. I have visited Cuxhaven a couple of times during my last 10 years living in Germany and it is also one of my favourite places in these parts of the country. Read more about what to see and do in Cuxhaven in this post.

WHERE TO GO IN SLOVENIA | 50 ideas for day trips & weekend trips

Katja SLOVENIA Leave a Comment

Spring is just around the corner and the season of day and weekend trips is in full swing. We still don´t know how this summer will look like in terms of travel, but last year it was pretty awesome to explore Slovenia, my home country, which borders were opened also to the international tourists. Therefore I have prepared a really long and comprehensive post with 50 ideas about where to go on a day or weekend trip in Slovenia. This took me a really long time, but I believe that it will be of great help to many, including me – I myself have not been able to visit all of the places I mention here, although while writing this post I realized I do know my home country quite well already. I´ve been discovering it on my own since almost 20 years now and on top of this we do a yearly day trip with my extended family with a rented bus, every time somewhere else. We make sure we include visits to the museums and other attractions, tourist farms, local craftsmen, natural wonders and other cultural sights. This is really a great way to get to know your country and see the whole family 1-2 times a year, especially if you like to hang out in large numbers. The places mentioned in this post follow an approximate geographically logical sequence, starting at the coast, Istria, Vipava, Karst and Goriška Brda to Soča valley, Gorenjska, Ljubljana, Notranjska, Bela Krajina, Posavje, Dolenjska, Kozjansko, Zasavje, Savinjska, Koroška, Štajerska, Prlekija, Pomurje and Prekmurje. I can’t wait for our official move back home to Slovenia this year, so that we can spend more weekends exploring our small country again. So if you are choosing Ljubljana as a base, or just have a couple of days to see the best of Slovenia, check out this post for the best trips you can take!

MEXICAN TORTILLAS | recipe and ideas

Katja FOOD + RECIPES Leave a Comment

Tortillas are thin and flat round Mexican pancakes, made of corn or wheat flour, which can be used in the preparation of various Mexican dishes. The traditional recipe originated in the region of Oaxaca, dating back to 1500-500 BC, when tortillas were prepared in the traditional way with a special flour called masa de maíz. From the time of the colonization of Central America until today, tortillas are also prepared with wheat flour, these are often found in northern Mexico, and of course in the United States and elsewhere. Tortillas are prepared by hand or with the help of a special device, i.e. tortilla press or tortillas. At home, we often organize a Mexican tacos evening with homemade tortillas, especially for some celebrations or when we get friends over for a visit. Tacos and other dishes prepared with tortillas are an ideal social food, since the whole family can participate in the preparation (our Lu likes to help in the kitchen too), and we also put all the ingredients in little cups, including sauces, on the table so that everyone prepares their own food. In this way it is often easier to please the taste buds of many guests, plus it is a fun thing to do. So in this post, we are sharing our recipe for homemade tortillas, which are of course much better than those from the supermarket, and we added a few ideas about which kind of dishes you can make with the tortillas as well.

8 LONG TERM TRAVELLERS ON THE ROAD DURING THE PANDEMIC | read their stories

Katja TIPS, TRAVEL & PANDEMIC Leave a Comment

Imagine being on the road somewhere in the middle of nowhere, in a foreign country, when the world declares the current pandemic. Imagine you have to leave the country, but none of the neighbouring ones will let you in and there are no available flights back home. Imagine you are travelling with your own vehicle, there is no way to ship it elsewhere and you don´t want to just leave it behind. Imagine quitting your job and moving out of the place you´ve been living at just weeks before this global pandemic and then having to cancel everything you were planning, saving for and dreaming about for the last years. Yes, to many, this might still sound like first world problems. But trust me, these are no easy situations and crucial decisions sometimes have to be made in minutes. Some of us have therefore completely changed our plans for 2020 and the following years. Some have managed to return home while they still could. But some decided to stay and continue what they were doing. Even though this surely meant new arrangements and route changes. In this post, I´ve gathered 8 of my favourite people, couples or families which are currently on the road, responsibly travelling in different parts of the world during the pandemic. Most of them have already been on their journeys when it all happened almost a year ago, but some have only just started theirs a few months ago. Here are their stories.

VIRTUAL TRAVEL | how to travel from home

Katja TIPS, TRAVEL & PANDEMIC 1 Comment

Itchy feet anyone? Mine sure are, but even almost after a year since the world stopped in terms of travel it doesn´t really seem like everything will be the same soon. Although we managed to escape here and there for a short time during this past year, we mostly spent it at home. Especially if I compare it to what we had planned for and to how our previous years looked like as well. And who knows, maybe it will be the same this year. I sure hope not, but who knows? After being stuck at home for the first month or two during the pandemic last spring I wrote a blog post about all the things we can do at home while in self-isolation, quarantine or lockdowns, but here is another, slightly more specific post on how we can actually travel virtually without leaving our home. For all travel enthusiasts. Surely you have tried some of these ideas in recent months, but maybe someone else gets new ideas about how to satisfy the desire to travel at least virtually.

ENGLISH MUFFINS | recipe and ideas

Katja FOOD + RECIPES Leave a Comment

English muffins are popular round, flat smaller breads, usually eaten for breakfast and brunches with sweet or savoury toppings. Despite their name, they are actually an American invention (first made by an English immigrant), but are now commonly eaten especially in Canada, Australia and UK as well. The word „English“ is simply used to distinguish them from plain muffins, which are larger and sweeter. Funnily though, in the UK they are called „muffins“ and the larger sweeter muffins are called „American muffins“. In Germany they are called “Toastbrötchen” and are easy to get in supermarkets, but they just taste so much better when you make them at home. We love them because they can be used to prepare many different dishes, from a simple and quick breakfast or brunch, to tasty burgers, small pizzas, sandwiches for road trips and more. Get our recipe and more toppings ideas in this post and try it out for yourselves.

AFRICAN SAFARI | best national parks and destinations

Katja KENYA, NAMIBIA, SAFARI, SOUTH AFRICAN REPUBLIC, TANZANIA, TIPS, UGANDA Leave a Comment

In Africa, there are so many national parks, nature reserves and protected areas which offer amazing safari experiences, but which places and parks are the best? Where can you see the famous big 5 and which have the most stunning landscapes? Well, it is really difficult to choose just a few, sometimes seeing the animals also has something to do with the luck factor and it also depends on how many days you spend exploring each park. Since I´m still a little bit disappointed that we had to cancel our African adventure to Kenya and Tanzania last summer, but incredibly grateful I was already able to visit some of the other parks, I put together a list of the best African safari parks which might give some of you an idea where to go next, or simply give you another reason for daydreaming about distant lands and natural wonders. Based on my personal experiences and online research, here are my top ones.

RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL | 30 ways how to travel more responsibly

Katja ADVICE & INSPIRATION Leave a Comment

All this extra time on our hands the last few months made me also think about many travel related issues. Not just about how travelling will change after the pandemic but also about how do we as individuals travel. What do we do and how do we act in order to keep our planet as safe and intact as possible. Trust me, I know we´ve all been there in one way or another and we maybe did some things while travelling we are now not proud of anymore. Maybe we rode an elephant, forgot a plastic cup at the beach, disregarded the local dress code, bought an inappropriate souvenir or similar. It was probably not intentionally, but simply just because we didn´t know any better. The tourism might be stagnating at the moment more than ever in the last decades, but surely this is just temporarily. We will all travel again, so let´s make sure we do it as responsibly as we can – to help you get some ideas and make you re-think the way you actually travel, here are my 30 suggestions.
